SOAS Law students put their skills to the test in Vienna
7 April 2015
A team of LLM School of Law students recently put their law skills into practice when they represented SOAS, University of London at the 22nd Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot oral hearings in Vienna.

The goal of the Vis Arbitral Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international business disputes and to train law leaders of tomorrow in methods of alternative dispute resolution. The week-long event offers an opportunity for students of law to immerse themselves in a complex case environment, requiring extensive preparation and research in the weeks and months prior to the hearings.
Maryan Hassan, SOAS LLM student and participant at the Vis Moot said: “This has been a life changing experience that has helped shape me from ambitious student into confident legal Counsel. I have come to truly appreciate the importance of team dynamic, hard work and self-belief. I am indebted to all the time and support Dr Emilia Onyema and our Coach Mr Chike Ezike have given to us these past 6 months. I implore all SOAS law students to take up this opportunity if they can!"
“I have lost count of the amount of academics, arbitration practitioners and Judges that I have met. The Vis Moot was a huge networking opportunity,” added Ilham Kabbouri.
The following LLM students represented SOAS at the 22nd Willem C. Vis Moot:
• Chike Ezike (coach)
• Vimal Varma Vasireddy
• Maryan Hassan
• Mulemwa Mukande
• Ilham Kabbouri
• Matthew Francis Steele
• Nimisha Sara Philip
• Lulwa Alzain
The delegation was supported with funding from the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, SOAS’ School of Law and the international law firm Ashurst LLP.
The Moot is organised by the Association for the Organisation and Promotion of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The Vis Arbitral Moot took place from 26 March - 2 April 2015.
