He was educated at London University (LL.B.); Lincoln's Inn, England (Barrister-at-Law). He was called to the Bar in 1961. In addition to his practice of the law, Alfred Rattray was a Lecturer and Examiner in Commercial Law at the University of the West Indies, and also Chartered Secretary and Manager, Association of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Chartered Accountant, Fellow of the institution of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica. International Economists, London School of Economics. He served as chairman and director of numerous statutory boards and businesses including: The Port of Authority of Jamaica; hotel companies; manufacturing enterprises; professional organisations and educational bodies. Served as Jamaica's Ambassador to Washington and as Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the Organisation of American States. His practice areas were Administrative Law; Appellate Practice; Bankruptcy; Banks and Banking; Business Law; Civil Law; Commercial Law; Company Law; Contracts; Corporate Law; Real Estate Agreements and Conveyancing; Leases and Leasing; Litigation; Negligence; Personal Injury; Torts; Trusts and Estates; Wills and Family Law.
