About the lecture:
India is not a book with seven seals, but a highly complex huge nation which has to live with many pluralist tensions. In this massive democracy, in which nowadays elections play a key role, it becomes important to understand how the people in charge of the nation present themselves and what ambitions and hopes they raise among voters. Our understanding of what really goes on in India is complicated by the fact that we are largely dependent on press reports, which introduce their own political and ideological perceptions.
The lecture employs the legal-philosophical symbolism of balanced kite flying to explore how India, despite far-reaching pluralist complications, has developed a rather clear vision of a better future. This is based on constitutional foundations, but has fundamental implications for all aspects of life, leading to surprising compromises and developments, which are also able to teach us some important lessons in Western democracies.
Professor Dr. em. Werner Menski graduated from the University of Kiel (MA, 1977) before joining the Seminar for Orientalism and Indology at the University of Bochum, where he worked as a research assistant (1977-1980). Between 1980 and 2014 he taught at the SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) at the London University. Today he is a world renowned lecturer and expert in the field of South-Asian law, Hindu law and Islamic law, editor of the South Asia Research, and visiting professor at several universities.
